...it was an amazing experience…a dream come true for me. I feel much more grounded and confident as a writer…I feel more connected to my passion for theatre. I think one of the REAL strengths..was a remarkable pool of talent, expecialy with actors. All the plays were remarkably well cast, which I think is crucial, absolutely crucial in the process. Well done, I say.
Michael Kranes, Playwright ‘00, University of Texas, Austin
This year’s WORDBRIDGE was just astonishingly good. Hard to put a finger on any one element, except perhaps that the ideal of just blowing scripts wide open to new ideas, approaches, experimentation was really embraced by all involved…the resource artists were invaluable in ways we could not have predicted. It’s a terrific recipe!
Ann Benedict, Guest Artist, ’00,’99
WORDBRIDGE provides a rare opportunity for young writers to explore their process. Each year the program gets better and better, and each year a new group of playwrights discover a freedom and challenge that they will not get anywhere else. We often speak of the theatre in crisis. But WB reminds us that as a living art form we have nothing to worry about – the great plays will be written.
KC Davis, Dramaturg WB ’00,’99
My favorite WB memory, and the one that encapsulates the experience for me is this: KC (Dramaturg) and I, both barefoot, screeching around the corner of the theatre in search of an actor, any actor, to play a dead woman in a glass case…Lucia (Playwright) had caught fire in rehearsal, had discovered how to use the tools we were giving her, was ready to move forward and was suddenly seeing possibilities for her play. This is what WB does best…giving playwrights tools this early in their career – gives them ownership of their vision and shows them how to have a voice during rehearsal – that’s a great gift.
While WB is geared towards the playwrights, it is also a fantastic way for directors to replenish themselves. Having the luxury of really immersing into process without caring about ‘results’ revives the part of me that wanted to go into directing in the first place.
Ellen Graham, Director, WB ’00
